Instructor: Mrs. Ruelas
Contact info: [email protected]
Course taught: Drawing/Painting
Objective/Purpose: In Art 1 you will explore basic observation drawing skills, creating depth on a two-dimensional surface, and learning the skills of portrait drawing. You will develop an understanding of the elements and principles of art and design. Additionally, you will also learn how to successfully view and critique historical art works as well as art of the 20th century.
Rules and Expectations: In addition to the rules stated in the Student/Parent handbook, the following rules must be followed by all students in order for all students to have a meaningful art experience.
1) Be Respectful – Be respectful to your teacher, other students, supplies and materials. Please try to follow the golden rule, do unto others as you would done onto you. If you are polite, others will take notice and do whatever possible to help you. Also, please be mindful that being on time with attendance and due dates is a show of respect to others. Art class is not a study hall! Do not bring outside work into this class or expect to complete homework on my time.
2) Be Responsible – You, as a student in the art room, are responsible for cleaning of the area in which you work, completion of projects and assignments, and your overall behavior in the art room. You are responsible for your actions at all times. When you are outside the classroom working on assignments, you are to act maturely and responsibly. Failure to act appropriately may be grounds for keeping you in class, which will make your assignments more difficult to complete.
3) Be Safe – Our art room is not unusually dangerous, but sharp tools and objects, occasionally slippery floors and the closeness of others can lead to accidents.
4) Cell phones are not to allowed in class. Cell phones can not be visible during the class period. iPads are not to be used for YouTube surfing and will be confiscated if this rule is not followed. GAMES ARE NOT ALLOWED.
5) NO FOOD unless approved ahead of time for special purposes. Water is permitted in clear bottles. Students will not be excused to go get food.
6) Please ask to leave the room at all times, and indicate time out on sign-out sheet. Students will not be allowed to go get food during the duration of the class.
Group Work Ethic Expectations: There may be a few times this semester where you will be required to work in groups. Everyone must have a job, know what that is before you leave the art room. Everyone should be doing something along with everyone having an input. Your group must come to a consensus on an idea. Consensus means you all live with the decision. If there are problems, take a vote. Be kind, be respectful and include everyone!
Big Ideas Established For All Art Classes:
- Through art, students will communicate and express creatively through materials.
- Through art, students will gain appreciation and connections to other cultures as well as ours.
- Art takes commitment, which leads to personal growth.
- Art is a personal and passionate response to circumstances.
Grading:
- Grading is based on points accumulated, determined by a combination of project work, written work, and sketches. This is a lab class and much of the work is dependent on the materials and equipment here in class, so attendance will have an impact on your work. If you are not present and constructive in class, you will not be able to do much of the work. Passing grades will only be given if a significant amount of work has been accomplished in class. Missed class time may be made up before school with the approval of the teacher.
- Your reason for having this class is so that you can use your resources here: your teacher, your time, and your peers. Do not waste time and resources here and expect to get credit because you have “completed” the assignment at home-this class is a process of learning, not just product production.
- Art 1 students will have a written final exam along with a final project due at the end of the semester. All information for the exam can be found on the class website and will be covered throughout the semester.
If you come to class on time -
If you think deeply-
If you are kind, thoughtful and respectful-
If you are diligent and work hard-
If you put in your best effort-
You will do great in this class!
If you are ever concerned about your grade, please come see me.
- I am always willing to help you improve!
